The mining of coal has two methods: Surface/opencast mining or either underground/deep mining. The choice of how the coal industry’s mining methods depends on the geology of the coal deposit. Underground/deep mining currently sits for a bigger share of the world production then surface/opencast mining. But in several coal producing countries surface mining is more  common than underground mining.
